Gioacchino Artoni (1886-1937) was born in Gualtresi, Reggio-Emilia, Italy. After coming to the United States, he worked as a manual laborer, as a miner in Pennsylvania, as a ditch digger, a farmer, and in the silk industry in Paterson, N.J. Artoni, a socialist, was self-educated. He was an organizer of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, and was known with great affection by his colleagues as "Papa Artoni".
